Aged care exercise physiology, what it looks like.
As we get older, changes in strength, balance, and mobility can make everyday tasks feel harder. Confidence in movement drops. Activities you used to do independently start to require support. This is normal, but it isn't inevitable with the right intervention.
Exercise Physiology for older adults focuses on practical, achievable goals: being able to get up from a chair without help, walking to the letterbox safely, carrying shopping, playing with grandchildren. The programs are designed around what matters to you, not a generic protocol.
James brings his clinical background in complex MSK, chronic disease, and whole-person wellbeing to older adult care. Every session is 1:1, unhurried, and tailored to your current capacity.
Falls prevention
Structured balance, strength, and gait training, the most evidence-supported intervention for reducing fall risk in older adults.
Strength & mobility
Progressive resistance training to combat sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), improve joint mobility, and build daily functional capacity.
Chronic disease management
Exercise prescription for T2DM, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis, conditions that become more common with age and that exercise directly improves.
Post-surgical recovery
Rehabilitation after joint replacement (hip, knee), fracture repair, or cardiac procedures, coordinated with your surgeon and GP.
How aged care EP is funded.
The aged care funding landscape changed significantly in 2025. Here's what applies to most clients seeking EP support.
Support at Home Program
The Australian Government's Support at Home program replaced Home Care Packages from 1 July 2025. Exercise Physiology is a funded allied health service under Support at Home, where services align with your assessed care needs and approved care plan.
How to access: You must be assessed through My Aged Care. Once approved, your care coordinator includes EP in your support plan. Contact James to discuss your situation and he can guide you through the process.
Commonwealth Home Support Programme
The CHSP provides entry-level government-funded aged care services, including allied health. Exercise Physiology is a covered service under the CHSP Allied Health category. CHSP continues until at least 30 June 2027 before transitioning into Support at Home.
How to access: Contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, or ask your GP to refer you. Once registered, your CHSP care provider can add EP as an allied health support.
Medicare CDM & Private
Older adults with chronic conditions (OA, T2DM, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis) commonly qualify for a Medicare CDM plan, up to 5 Medicare-rebated EP sessions per year with a GP referral.
Private self-pay is always available with no referral required, and most private health extras policies cover EP. DVA Gold Card holders can also access aged care-related EP under their standard DVA coverage.
Not sure which pathway applies to you? Call James on 0418 153 608 or email admin@fwphysiology.com, he can discuss your situation, confirm the right funding pathway, and let you know what information you'll need to bring to your first visit.
Remedial massage for older adults.
Clinical remedial massage addresses soft tissue tension, chronic pain, and restricted joint mobility, all common challenges for older adults. As an MMA-accredited Remedial Massage Therapist, James can provide therapeutic massage as part of a broader aged care program.
Remedial massage can be included in a Support at Home care plan as a therapeutic support, or claimed through private health extras. Sessions are 30, 45, or 60 minutes and can be combined with an exercise physiology session.
