Neurological conditions

Conditions we treat.

James treats a range of neurological conditions, with referral support for presentations that require a multidisciplinary team setting.

Our approach

What a neurological initial assessment looks like.

Every neurological client starts with a comprehensive 60-minute assessment. We don't jump straight into exercise, we take the time to understand the full picture first.

This covers your functional limitations and what activities of daily living are affected, a review of the evidence base for exercise in your specific condition, a detailed functional capacity assessment to establish your baseline, your goals and what you want to get out of treatment, and a structured short and long-term treatment plan built around your NDIS plan (if applicable), your goals, and the current evidence.

Step 1

Understand your limitations

What can't you do now? What were you doing before? What do carers, family, or your treating team observe?

Step 2

Review the evidence

What does the current research say about exercise for your condition? What intensities, modalities, and frequencies are supported?

Step 3

Functional capacity & goal-setting

Objective testing of your current capacity, then building a plan around your goals, not a generic protocol.

NDIS & funding

Neurological conditions & NDIS funding.

Many neurological conditions qualify for NDIS funding, and exercise physiology sits within the Capacity Building, Improved Daily Living support category (15_200_0126_1_3). As an unregistered NDIS provider, Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology can see self-managed and plan-managed participants directly, no agency approval required.

For participants with neurological conditions, exercise physiology support can be justified under goals relating to improved physical function, maintaining independence, community participation, and reducing reliance on supports over time. James writes detailed progress reports and plan-review FCAs that clearly evidence functional outcomes.

Remedial Massage under NDIS: As an MMA-accredited allied health professional, James can also provide remedial massage as a therapeutic support under NDIS (Therapeutic Supports, 15_037_0128_1_3) for eligible participants.

Why exercise is core neurological care.

Across stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and acquired brain injury, the modern evidence tells one story: structured exercise improves function, fitness, fatigue and quality of life, and for progressive conditions like Parkinson's, sustained vigorous exercise is one of the few interventions associated with slower symptom progression. Neurological rehabilitation is long-haul work, which is why programs here are built for consistency: 1:1 sessions, realistic progressions, family and support-worker involvement where helpful, and NDIS-ready reporting throughout.

Every program starts from a functional assessment, transfers, walking capacity, balance, fatigue patterns, and builds toward the goals that actually matter to you, whether that's community walking, driving readiness support, falls confidence or returning to work.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked

Yes, the evidence for exercise in neurological conditions is strong and growing. For stroke, structured exercise improves walking speed, balance, cardiovascular fitness, and upper limb function. For MS, exercise reduces fatigue, improves mood, strength, and maintains function through relapses. For Parkinson's, high-intensity exercise is now recognised as potentially neuroprotective and significantly improves motor symptoms. ABI rehabilitation benefits from graded exercise that builds capacity without triggering symptom flare.
Ground-floor access is available at Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology for clients who cannot use the stairs. Please mention your mobility needs when booking, James will arrange the ground-floor clinic room. The ground floor has flat access and is wheelchair accessible.
Neurological conditions commonly qualify for NDIS (Capacity Building, Improved Daily Living), DVA (veterans with neurological conditions from service), Medicare CDM (for chronic neurological conditions), and private health extras. Workers Comp and CTP can also fund rehabilitation for accident-acquired neurological conditions.
Yes. James sends progress letters to referring clinicians within 2 weeks and at major milestones. For complex cases, he actively coordinates with the treating neurologist, physiotherapist, and other team members. If a case exceeds what's appropriate for a sole-practitioner setting, James will facilitate a warm referral to a multidisciplinary team.
Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology is an unregistered NDIS provider. This means we can see self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants directly, no agency approval or registration required. Agency-managed participants would need their LAC or plan manager to facilitate access to an unregistered provider.
