What we do

What is Exercise Physiology?

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university-trained allied health professional who uses exercise as a clinical intervention for injury, disease, and disability. Unlike a personal trainer, an AEP can claim Medicare, NDIS, DVA, and Workers Compensation, and is qualified to assess, prescribe, and monitor therapeutic exercise for complex medical presentations.

At Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology, exercise physiology means 1:1 clinical assessment and program design, not group classes or supervision of generic programs. James assesses your specific presentation, reviews the clinical evidence for your condition, and builds a structured program around your goals.

Why people choose me.

Canberra has plenty of exercise physiologists. Most of my clients arrive after trying somewhere else, and the reasons they stay are consistent. Every session is one on one with me, never handed to a screen or a gym floor rotation. I am also a qualified remedial massage therapist, so hands on treatment and exercise live in the same plan instead of in two different buildings. And I built this practice around the cases others find inconvenient: complex injuries that have already failed physio, mental health referrals, older adults who want strength rather than supervision.

My background is the sharp end of sport and rehabilitation, professional work with the AIS and the AIS Basketball program, clinical years at Clinic 88 under some of the best hands in the industry, and a placement with the Belconnen Magpies. That standard of reasoning comes with me into every suburban knee, back and shoulder that walks in.

What you can expect.

  • An assessment that actually looks for the cause, not a template
  • A program built for your body, goals and funding pathway
  • Progress measured with real numbers you can see move
  • Straight answers, including when something is outside my lane

Every funding pathway is handled here: Medicare care plans, NDIS, DVA, workers compensation and private, with prices published openly because you should not need to phone around to learn what health care costs.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked

Both are university-trained allied health professionals who can claim Medicare, NDIS, and DVA. Physiotherapists are more focused on manual therapy, acute injury assessment, and early rehabilitation. Exercise Physiologists specialise in therapeutic exercise prescription for chronic conditions, disability, and longer-term rehabilitation. They work best together, James actively coordinates with physiotherapists involved in his clients' care.
No referral is needed for private appointments. Medicare CDM requires a GP referral (Team Care Arrangement). DVA requires a D904 referral. NDIS participants need an active plan. Workers Comp requires insurer approval and a claim number.
This depends entirely on your condition and goals. James gives a realistic estimate at your initial assessment, with formal 6-weekly reviews. There are no forced session packages, you progress as your condition dictates.
Yes, always. Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology has no group classes and no supervised gym sessions. Every appointment is 1:1 with James. This is a design choice, not a limitation.
