Type 2 Diabetes.
Exercise physiology for T2DM focuses on improving blood glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, and HbA1c through structured aerobic and resistance training. Both modalities show independent and additive effects. James monitors clinical markers over time and coordinates with your GP, medication adjustments in response to improved glucose control are common and expected.
What the evidence says.
Muscle is the largest glucose sink in your body, and exercise is the most powerful non drug tool we have for type 2 diabetes. Combined aerobic and resistance training reliably lowers HbA1c by around 0.6 to 0.9 percent, improves insulin sensitivity for up to 48 hours after each session, and reduces cardiovascular risk, which is what actually threatens most people with diabetes. In early disease, substantial weight loss combined with training can drive remission.
How I treat it.
Programs combine strength work, because more muscle means more glucose disposal, with aerobic training timed and dosed for glucose control. We coordinate with your GP and diabetes educator, keep an eye on hypoglycaemia risk if you are on insulin or sulfonylureas, and pay proper attention to feet, eyes and blood pressure in how sessions are structured.
Just as importantly, sessions are built to be sustainable. The client who trains twice a week for five years beats the client who trains five times a week for six weeks. Medicare care plans commonly fund the first block, and I report your measurable progress back to your GP.
What we aim for.
- A falling HbA1c your GP can see at your next review
- Strength and muscle mass that permanently improve glucose handling
- Waist, weight and blood pressure trending the right way
- An exercise habit that survives contact with real life
