Condition overview

Heart Disease & Cardiac Rehabilitation.

James treats post-MI, post-stent, and general cardiovascular disease presentations. Exercise is strongly recommended post-cardiac event by Australian cardiovascular guidelines. Programs are graded carefully, monitoring cardiac response, and coordinated with your cardiologist. A clearance letter from your cardiologist is requested before starting.

What the evidence says.

Exercise based cardiac rehabilitation is one of the best proven interventions in all of medicine. Large Cochrane reviews show it reduces cardiovascular mortality and hospital readmission and improves quality of life after heart attack, stents, bypass surgery and in stable heart failure. Despite that, most eligible Australians never complete a program. Finishing one, and then continuing to train, is where the benefit lives.

I work with people after stroke, after heart attack, and with any heart condition that needs a structured and monitored exercise intervention, including heart failure, atrial fibrillation and post surgical recovery.

How I treat it.

We start with your cardiac history, your medications, your specialist's guidance and a careful baseline: resting and exercising heart rate response, blood pressure behaviour, and a graded functional test. Programs then build both aerobic capacity and strength, because muscle is protective in cardiac disease, with intensity progressed inside clear, individually set monitoring limits.

Every session is 1:1, heart rate monitored, and adjusted to how you present on the day. With your consent I report to your GP and cardiologist, so the whole team sees your progress, and a Medicare care plan usually funds part of the program.

What we aim for.

  • A measurably fitter heart: more work at a lower heart rate, retested regularly
  • Confidence to exert yourself again without fear
  • Strength that protects you: carrying, climbing, living without symptoms dictating terms
  • A long term routine you can sustain independently, in a gym or at home
