DVA Exercise Physiology

DVA exercise physiology for Gold and White Card holders in Canberra.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) funds exercise physiology for eligible Gold Card and White Card holders through the D904 referral pathway. I'm DVA-approved and I've worked with veterans across a broad range of presentations including musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain, mental health (PTSD, anxiety, depression), cardiovascular disease, and neurological conditions.

There is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible DVA clients. DVA pays James directly at the scheduled rate. You need a D904 referral from your GP to access DVA-funded exercise physiology, and the referral specifies the number of sessions approved. James communicates progress to your GP and treating team with your consent.

DVA conditions treated

Common DVA presentations at Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology.

DVA clients at Fitness & Wellbeing Physiology present across a wide range of conditions. The most common include musculoskeletal conditions from service injuries (knee, hip, shoulder, back), chronic pain, cardiovascular conditions (heart disease, hypertension), mental health conditions (PTSD, anxiety, depression, particularly common in veterans and serving members), and age-related conditions such as osteoarthritis, falls risk, and strength decline.

James has specific experience with the complexity of veteran health presentations, including the frequent co-occurrence of physical and psychological conditions, the impact of chronic pain on mental health, and the importance of a trauma-informed approach in assessment and treatment. He treats DVA clients with the same 1:1, clinically rigorous approach as all other clients.

DVA questions

DVA exercise physiology questions.

A D904 referral is required to initiate a new DVA-funded episode of care. The referral specifies the number of sessions approved (typically 12–20 for an initial course). Once approved sessions are completed, your GP can issue a new referral if further treatment is clinically indicated. DVA moved from treatment cycles to an annual monetary limit model, which James can explain in more detail at your initial appointment.
Gold Card holders can access exercise physiology for any health condition, regardless of whether it is service-related. White Card holders can only access exercise physiology for conditions that have been formally accepted as service-related by DVA. If you're unsure about your eligibility, contact DVA on 1800 555 254 or speak to your GP.
Yes. DVA covers exercise physiology for mental health conditions including PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Gold Card holders access this for any mental health condition; White Card holders for accepted conditions. James has specific experience and genuine expertise in exercise as an intervention for mental health, and this is one of the primary focuses of the clinic.
