Our approach

Anxiety & Depression.

Exercise for anxiety and depression has one of the strongest evidence bases in mental health. Meta-analyses show aerobic exercise produces effect sizes comparable to antidepressant medication for mild-to-moderate depression. Exercise also provides a structured, agentic activity that combats the withdrawal and avoidance patterns central to anxiety and depression.

What the evidence says.

For mild to moderate depression, exercise performs comparably to antidepressants and psychotherapy in head to head research, and it stacks with both. For anxiety, structured training reduces symptom severity with effects that build over weeks. The mechanisms are real and physical: exercise raises BDNF, a protein that supports mood regulation and learning, improves sleep architecture, and gives an overactive stress system somewhere structured to go.

Graded exercise also works like exposure therapy for the body. A racing heart and fast breathing in a safe, controlled setting teach your nervous system that arousal is not danger. That is not a metaphor. It is trainable, and I train it deliberately.

How I treat it.

Sessions are 1:1 in a quiet gym, and the first thing we establish is that nothing here will be overwhelming. Some clients start with a walk. Some want to lift on day one. The dose is always yours. I program strength and aerobic work at intensities matched to where your nervous system is that day, and we build up as your capacity, physical and emotional, grows.

I stay in contact with your psychologist and GP with your consent, because this works best as part of a team. NDIS psychosocial funding, DVA and Medicare care plans all cover this work.

What we aim for.

  • Symptom scores, measured with validated tools, moving the right way
  • Sleep, energy and appetite steadying
  • A body that feels like an ally instead of an alarm system
  • Confidence that transfers outside the gym: work, social life, daily structure
