Condition overview

Hypertension.

Structured aerobic and resistance exercise produces clinically significant reductions in blood pressure, comparable to low-dose antihypertensive medication in some populations. James builds programs targeting the frequency, intensity, and duration shown in trials to reduce BP, monitoring response over time and coordinating with your GP on medication review.

What the evidence says.

Regular exercise lowers resting blood pressure by roughly 5 to 8 mmHg in people with hypertension, an effect in the same range as a single medication, and it stacks with medication rather than competing with it. Both aerobic training and properly prescribed resistance work contribute, and newer evidence supports isometric work, like timed wall sits and handgrip protocols, as a surprisingly effective addition.

How I treat it.

Blood pressure is measured before and during early sessions so we know exactly how your body responds, and the program is built around that response: steady aerobic work, progressive strength training with careful attention to breathing technique, and isometric protocols where they suit. No breath holding surprises, no unmonitored maximal lifts.

Alongside training we track the numbers that matter to your GP: resting pressure trends, waist measurement, and how the program interacts with your medications. Reports go back to your doctor with your consent, and a Medicare care plan often funds the first block.

What we aim for.

  • A clinically meaningful drop in resting blood pressure, tracked over weeks
  • Safe confident training technique you can use in any gym
  • Reduced reliance on escalating medication, in partnership with your GP
  • Fitness and strength gains that protect your heart, brain and kidneys long term
Frequently asked

Frequently asked

Hypertension commonly qualifies for a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, providing up to 5 Medicare-rebated sessions per year with a GP referral. Ask your GP about a Team Care Arrangement.
Yes. James sends progress letters to your GP within 2 weeks of initial assessment and at major milestones. For cardiac clients, letters are also provided to your cardiologist.
Yes, with appropriate assessment and graded prescription. James reviews your clinical history, current medications, and any contraindications before starting. For cardiac clients, cardiologist clearance is requested.
