Condition overview

Obesity & Weight Management.

Evidence-based exercise for sustainable weight management and body composition change. James takes a health-focused rather than aesthetics-focused approach, the goal is metabolic health, functional capacity, and sustainable habits, with weight loss as a byproduct of improved health behaviours.

What the evidence says.

Exercise on its own is a modest tool for weight loss, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What the evidence actually shows is more interesting: exercise is the single best predictor of keeping weight off once lost, it preserves muscle while you lose fat, which protects your metabolism, and it improves health dramatically even when the scales barely move. Fitness changes your risk profile more than weight does.

For people using medications like GLP-1 agonists, resistance training matters even more, because a meaningful share of medication driven weight loss can come from muscle unless you train against it.

How I treat it.

No judgement, no boot camp, no weigh in theatre. We build strength first, because muscle is the engine of your metabolism and because getting stronger feels good in a way that scale numbers never quite do. Aerobic work is added at a dose you can actually recover from, and everything is programmed around joints that may be carrying more load than they would like.

I track measurements that respect the whole picture: strength numbers, waist, fitness markers, energy, sleep. If you are working with a GP or dietitian on the nutrition side, I coordinate with them; a care plan can fund part of the program.

What we aim for.

  • Strength and muscle preserved or built while fat is lost
  • Fitness gains that cut cardiovascular and diabetes risk regardless of the scales
  • Joints that cope with more activity, not less
  • Weight that stays off, because the habits that moved it are still there
