Post-Surgical Shoulder Rehabilitation.
Post-surgical shoulder rehabilitation (following rotator cuff repair, labral surgery, stabilisation, or total shoulder replacement) is aligned precisely with your surgeon's protocol. Phases progress from protected movement and swelling management, through progressive strengthening, to full functional return. James liaises with your surgeon and provides progress letters.
What the evidence says.
Shoulder surgery, rotator cuff repair, stabilisation, replacement, is only half the treatment. The other half is the months of graded rehabilitation that determine whether the repair becomes a strong, trusted shoulder or a guarded one. The evidence is consistent: outcomes track with rehab adherence and appropriately staged loading, respecting tissue healing timeframes early, then progressively demanding more as the repair matures.
How I treat it.
I work from your surgeon's protocol and stay in contact with them as you progress. Early phases protect the repair while keeping everything around it working. The middle phase rebuilds range and baseline strength. The final phase, the one most people never get taken through, restores real world capacity: lifting overhead, carrying, sport, work demands, with objective strength testing to prove the shoulder is ready.
Because I am also a remedial massage therapist, the stiff, guarded tissue that accumulates around a healing shoulder gets treated in the same room as the strengthening, one plan, one practitioner.
What we aim for.
- Range and strength benchmarks hit on your surgeon's timeline
- A shoulder you trust overhead, not just one that moves
- Return to work, sport and sleep without guarding
- Objective testing that says ready, rather than guesswork
